  1. The total opposition of a circuit to the
  2. passage of electric current. It has the
  3. symbol Z. For a direct current (DC) it is the
  4. total resistance R of all the components in
  5. the circuit. For an alternating current (AC)
  6. it also includes the reactance X (caused by
  7. capacitance or inductance); the impedance can
  8. then be found using the equation Z^2 = R^2 +
  9. X^2. In acoustics, impedance refers to the
  10. ratio of the force per unit area to the
  11. volume displaced by the surface across which
  12. sound is being transmitted.
